5. What safety standards do your velvet sofas meet?
All our velvet sofas comply with the mandatory federal flammability standard under 16 CFR Part 1640, which is based on California Technical Bulletin 117‑2013 (Requirements, Test Procedure and Apparatus for Testing the Smolder Resistance of Materials Used in Upholstered Furniture). Upholstered furniture manufactured, imported, or reupholstered on or after June 25, 2021 must meet this standard.
Key requirements:
-
Smolder resistance testing: Cover fabrics, barrier materials, and filling materials must resist ignition from a smoldering cigarette as specified in TB 117‑2013.
-
Permanent labeling: Each item must bear a permanent label with the statement: "Complies with U.S. CPSC requirements for upholstered furniture flammability." CPSC staff recommends the label be conspicuous and legible. The label text must be in English, have a font height of at least 1/8 inch, and be not smaller than other text on the label.
Certificate requirement: As general‑use products (not intended for children 12 and under), we provide a General Certificate of Conformity (GCC) available upon request, certifying compliance with 16 CFR Part 1640 based on testing or a reasonable testing program.
Flame retardant disclosure (California): All velvet sofas sold in California must include a label stating whether the product contains added flame retardant chemicals as required by California law.
6. Do your velvet sofas require surface coating lead testing?
Yes. Under 16 CFR Part 1303, any paint or similar surface‑coating material on furniture for consumer use must not contain lead exceeding 90 ppm (0.009% by weight). The Consumer Product Safety Act declares paints or similar surface coating materials containing 0.009% or more lead by weight to be banned hazardous products. This applies to all painted metal legs, decorative trim, or other coated components.
